In order to travel by bus from La Paz to Calama, you need to break up your trip in two sections, as the direct route is not offered by bus companies at this time. The most efficient way to make the trip is to travel first from La Paz to Oruro, and from there to take a direct bus to Calama. Oruro is 224 km away from La Paz and the trip by bus takes around 3 hours. The buses from La Paz to Oruro leave every half an hour from the bus terminal located on Avenida Peru. Before boarding the bus, you need to pay a small fee of 2.5 Bs called "Uso de Terminal".

The buses arrive in Oruro at the bus terminal located on Gregorio Reynolds. From that same bus terminal you can take a direct bus to Calama. Calama is located 766 km from Oruro and the trip by bus takes around 9 hours. The buses leave every day at 13:00 and at 23:00. The bus crosses the altiplano, and the border crossing is in Colchane. You will arrive in Calama at the bus terminal, located on
Calle Granaderos.

TRAVEL OPTIONS FROM LA PAZ TO CALAMA

Trip with stopover: There is no direct trip from La Paz to Calama. You must go first to Oruro from La Paz. There are frequent departures on this route (with Trans Aroma and Trans Atlas). To continue your journey towards Calama, Trans Salvador has two departures per day in semi lie-flat buses.

SOME TOURISTIC INFORMATION THAT CAN BE OF INTEREST

Founded at the crossing of two Inca trails, Calama is now a mining town, and still serves as a stopover for people headed elsewhere. Some people traveling to San Pedro de Atacama end up spending the night here, and the town does have a few attractions of its own.

Chuquicamata: It is the largest copper mine in the world. Guided tours can be organized.

San Francisco de Chiu Chiu: Thirty to 40 minutes from Calama by car, San Francisco de Chiu Chiu is a small village with a river running through it and its own vegetable gardens. The church built in 1674 is one of the oldest in the region.

San Pedro de Atacama: Located one and a half hour away from Calama, San Pedro has many tourist attractions: Valle de la Luna, Valle de la Muerto, El Tatio Geysers, and one can enjoy there one of the clearest night skies in the world.

Food: Try traditional regional dishes like patasca (a stew made from corn, potatoes, vegetables and meat), and a barbecue of grilled llama meat and river trout.
