Hiking: There are a number of easy and pleasant hikes that you do from Tupiza such as the nearby Cerro Corazon de Jesus. You can also hike to Cerro de la Cruz for hilltop views of the town. Another hike is Cordillera de Chicas. You can reach these places with a tour or with public transportation.
Salt Flats: Starting a salt flats tour in Tupiza is a great alternative to starting in Uyuni: if you start from Tupiza you will arrive at the tourist sites at different times than the tours leaving from Uyuni or San Pedro de Atacama. You can enjoy the sites without the company of other tourists.
Food: You can head to the main market and eat at one of the stalls to try the local delicacies for a very affordable amount. There are also restaurants offering pizza and pasta.
