TRAVEL OPTIONS FROM UYUNI TO ORURO

Tickets Bolivia offers one bus travel option for this journey:

• Direct trip by bus: The journey from Uyuni to Oruro is direct and lasts 4:30 hours. Departures are at 4am and 2:30pm every day. You can travel safely on this route with Expreso 11 de Julio.
  
• Direct trip by train: Another option is to travel from Uyuni to Oruro by train. There are two trains who do this journey: The Wara Wara del Sur and Expreso del Sur. Wara Wara del Sur runs on Tuesdays and Fridays leaving at 1:45am, and the Expreso del Sur runs Wednesdays and Saturdays, leaving at 11:50pm. They offer the choice to travel in 2nd class and Executive. The train is direct and takes about 7 hours.
  
• Trip with stopover: You can also go from Uyuni to Potosi, which is 4 hours on a paved road and visit a beautiful, colonial town filled with history. From Potosi to Oruro it’s another 6 hours. Bus companies providing this service are Expreso 11 de Julio and Trans Azul.

SOME TOURISTIC INFORMATION THAT CAN BE OF INTEREST

• Carnival of Oruro: The Carnival of Oruro is an annual festival held in Oruro. It is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Bolivia. Its history goes back more than 200 years, and it is an indigenous festival which later merged with Catholic rituals.
  
• Virgen del Socavon: The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Socavon (Virgin of the Mines) was built in 1781. Here locals worship the Virgin, patron saint of the miners. The sanctuary also has religious art museum and can be accessed by cable car in the weekends.
  
• The Obrajes Hot Springs - Balneario de Obrajes: About 20 kilometers east of the city there is an important area of thermal waters which is quickly becoming known among tourists and Bolivians as the country’s best medicinal-recreational center. Locals believe its waters have curative qualities and there is accommodation there. 
  
• The Capachos Hot Springs – Balneario Capachos: Located 12 kilometers from Oruro, it has hot springs too, along with individual baths and covered pools. The view of the surrounding area is very peaceful and pretty.
  
• Food: Try charquekan, the Oruro specialty dish of dried llama meat served with fresh cheese, beans, corn and spicy sauce.
  
• Accommodation: Book ahead if you are planning to visit Oruro during the Carnival as hotels and hostels will fill up very quickly.
