TRAVEL OPTIONS FROM SUCRE TO POTOSI

Tickets Bolivia offers several bus travel options to make this journey:

• Direct trip: There are direct buses from Sucre to Potosi. The journey takes 3 hours. There are up to 9 departures daily. Buses leave Sucre between 6:00am or 8:00pm from the bus terminal on Avenida Ostria Gutierrez and arrive in Potosi at the new bus terminal on Avenida Las Banderas. Before boarding the bus you have to pay a small fee called Uso de terminal which costs 2.5 Bs per person. The company operating this route is Trans Emperador (bus normal).

SOME TOURISTIC INFORMATION THAT CAN BE OF INTEREST

• Casa de la Moneda: This is a great museum about the history of the silver mines and Potosí as one of the world’s first coin mints. Guided tours in English or Spanish lead you through 20 galleries that show everything from weapons to archeology to the coin presses themselves.
  
• Cerro Rico: There are several companies that offer visits of the mines. Some companies are more ethical than others. Check online reviews to make sure you book the tour with a company that really supports the miners.
  
• City Center: Several impressive and well preserved colonial buildings can be found in Potosi’s city center: Torre de la Compañía de Jesús,  Catedral de la Ciudad de Potosi, Convento Museo Santa Teresa, and Iglesia de San Lorenzo de Carangas, are some of the highlights.
  
• Hot springs: Belief in the curative powers of Tarapaya turned these thermal baths into the most frequently visited hot-springs around Potosí (21km northwest of the city). They date back to Inca times.
  
• Food: Typical dishes of Potosí are Cazuela, Aji de Pataskha, Chambergos, Chajchu, Calapurka, among others. Do not miss the calapurka, a soup made with wheat flour and cooked with a hot stone.
  
• Accommodation: Located at 4,060 meters above sea level, Potosi can get particularly cold at night and in winter. Bring layers and be prepared that some hostels may not have heating.
