In order to travel by land from Machu Picchu to Lima you must divide the trip in two sefments, going first from Machu Picchu to Cusco by train and then from Cusco to Lima in a direct bus. 

The train from Machu Picchu to Cusco takes around two hours, covering a distance of 74 km. For this part of the trip you have many different train companies and schedules to choose from. The trains leave every day from the train station in Machu Picchu pueblo, located in the Las Orquídeas neighborhood. Once in Cusco you must go to the Bus Terminal located on Vía Evitamiento in order to travel on to Lima.

In order to travel from Cuzco to Lima by bus you must cover a distance of 1092 kilometers, and the trip takes around 22 hours. The buses leave every day. During the trip you will pass amazing lanscapes, from high altitude to sea level. In Lima, the buses from the bus company Oltursa arrive at the Gran Terminal Terrestre Plaza Norte, located on Av. Tupac Amaru, block 69, Independencia. The direct buses leave from Cuzco at 16:00 and arrive in Lima the next day, at around noon.
